On April 12, 2014, the Theodor Heuss Prize will be awarded to Christo.
The Prize is named after the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany and honors exemplary democratic behaviour, active tolerance in society and the idea of international understanding in the spirit of reconciliation.
With the wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag, an initially ambivalent symbol of German democracy, Christo and Jeanne-Claude revealed the socio-political potencial of their work. The Wrapped Reichstag impressed so many people that, by means of its re-adaptation through art, it was able to rid itself of its ambivalence as a democratic symbol. Now, the Reichstag is considered a symbol of new beginnings.
